Goldfrapp's voice is given a new texture to work with, and on 'Clowns,' it sounds more ethereal than ever against a backdrop of plucked guitars and pulled strings. The elecctronics are still there, but used much more subtly, like the quiet tweeting on 'Little Bird' that quickly turns cosmic. The filters on 'Eat Yourself' make it sound like a crackly vinyl dug up from someone's basement somewhere, while 'A&E' goes for the bucolic.

'Cologne Cerrone Houdini' meanwhile dives headfirst into the 70s with its string sweeps. But there are two things that Goldfrapp excel at, and they're both on this album. The first is pure pop pleasure, and the ridiculously joyous 'Happiness' delivers this in spades. The second is melancholy beauty, and 'Some People' has this base covered. The SEVENTH TREE continues to grow in my heart.
